The company’s logo is Hello Fun — but these days, Pedego Corona del Mar has a more practical approach to its business of selling high-end battery-powered bicycles.

“Everyone’s talking about gas prices,” said owner Bill Coleman, who lives with his family in the Flower Streets. “I’ve been selling more bikes to commuters. One man rides 11 miles to work, takes off the battery, charges it while he’s working and then rides home.”

Pedego Corona del Mar opened in August at 2515 East Coast Highway, selling and renting electric bicycles that were invented by Orange County resident Don DiConstanzo.

Coleman, 43, had been working in a family business based in Signal Hill and wanted to open a shop locally to spend more time with his wife and 2-year-old-daughter. A friend and golf buddy had opened a Pedego shop in Huntington Beach, and Coleman thought the bikes would be a hit in Corona del Mar.

“It’s well received,” he said of the showroom. “People are excited. It’s something new and different.”

A lot of passersby stop in to ask questions about the colorful bicycles, which have batteries that allow the rider to have electric backup on hills or on longer rides. Some customers are avid cyclists and want to find a bicycle for their partners.

“They want to get out and ride together,” Coleman said. “Pedego bikes are the great equalizer. Everybody’s talking about them now.”

Rising gas prices, he said, have brought in a new group of customers who are looking to commute by bike but want the backup of the battery pack.

“I’ve sold a lot to younger guys in their 30s, looking for a better way to get to work,” he said. A new model commuter bike, which includes a built-in odometer and speed gauge, has been a best-seller, he said.

Pedego bikes range from $1,895 to $2,695, Coleman said. He encouraged anyone interested in trying them out to stop by the shop to arrange a rental.

Coleman added that he’s already planning on stocking up for Christmas orders.

“I suggest that anyone who wants to surprise someone with a bike take some time to rent one, so they know what the perfect gift would be,” he said.
