UPDATED A man has died from injuries sustained in a crash in the 8000 block of East Coast Highway, a coroner’s press release states.

The man, whose identity was not released pending positive identification, died at 4:45 p.m. Sunday at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. The accident occurred at 7:48 p.m. Saturday, the release said, when a van struck a pedestrian.

Coroner’s officials later identified the victim as David Yoak, 38, with no listed city of residence.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle traveling westbound on East Coast Highway struck a pedestrian,” said Kathy Lowe, a Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman, in an email. The crash occurred just west of Reef Point Drive, she said. “The driver of the vehicle was not cited or arrested at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.”

I guess now we need another committee with more ways to spend tax dollars to protect pedestrians. Maybe divert some of the 450,000 Newport so quickly offered to the cyclist. Add paint to the streets and put up more signs. Where are the 4 pages of comments? Oh wait the pedestrians are not a special interest group trying to push an agenda.

Horrible. Just horrible. Why aren't there more comments from everyone since we all walk? Is it possible (sarcasm font) that sometimes there are accidents and not hate filled drivers? Bottom line is highways are dangerous and extra caution must be taken by all of us whether we are walking, driving or riding.

I talked to the gate guard at Reef Point this morning; he said he heard it was a transient who was killed by a taxi. I took a look at the scene and saw the orange accident markings on the road. Based on wheel placement markings, it looks like as many as four cars were involved, besides the pedestrian. Tough intersection: 3 travel lanes each way on PCH with a 55MPH speed limit, only one painted crosswalk (on the south side) across the road, and a bus stop on the north (non-crosswalk) side of the road. No sidewalks. Just a shoulder/bikelane, then a raised curb, then (very) uneven dirt. Cars pull into the bikelane to park, make calls, get directions etc all the time.
