The owner of a jewelry store in the 3600 block of East Coast Highway reported an attempted robbery at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to online logs and a police spokeswoman.
The store owner said a man entered the store and ordered him to the back of the store, said Kathy Lowe, a Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman. The store was not identified.
The store owner told police he fled from the store and called police, but officers who responded were unable to find the suspect, Lowe said in an email.
The suspect was described as a white male, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds,. He was last seen wearing a black top and grey sweatpants. No additional details about the incident were immediately available, Lowe said.
