Anyone with expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs will be able to dispose of them safely — no questions asked — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the OASIS Senior Center.
The Newport Beach Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration are hosting the free, anonymous event, which could prevent pill abuse and theft, the police said in a statement.
“Last April, Americans turned in 552,161 pounds—276 tons—of prescription drugs at over 5,600 sites operated by the DEA and nearly 4,300 state and local law enforcement partners,” the statement said. “In its four previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners took in over 1.5 million pounds—nearly 775 tons—of pills.”
Unused medication can be stolen and abused, the statement said. Also, experts have warned that flushing unwanted medicine or throwing in the trash could create health hazards.
The OASIS center is located at Fifth and Marguerite avenues.
