Tree Branch Falls; Orchid Ave. Partially Blocked

A large branch broke off from a tree in the 200 block of Orchid Avenue and was partially blocking the roadway early this morning.

The branch fell about 9 p.m. Saturday, a witness said. The witness said the branch did not injure anyone, and that it was not windy at the time it fell. Information about the tree, including whether it showed signs of disease, was not immediately available.

This tree has obvious signs of disease visible in the fallen branch and what remains. The bottom of the tree has hundreds of sucker branches. This is a heavy branch and wmould have killed anyone it hit. I thought the city inspected all the trees this summer? Good to see they are on top of clearing it out of the street too...it has been there all day and attracted the interest of neighborhood kids who i've seen playing on it.Tell me the fire department doesn't own a chainsaw? It should be cut up so it is less of a danger and pulled to the side for whoever is responsible for its cleanup on monday. Cones aren't sufficent.

Most of the Carob Trees in CDM are diseased and are a threat to public safety. The tree on Orchid is actually smaller and less diseased than several others in the village. The Carob Tree is originally from the Mediterranean region and grows in dry, well-drained soil. It becomes especially prone to fungus and disease when it is planted in irrigated parkways or areas where there is a high sandy water table (as in CDM). Common results of disease are large snapping branches and trees toppling over because the roots have rotted. Santa Monica faced a similar problem a few years ago and spent thousands of dollars to evaluate the situation (see link below). They removed the diseased trees! http://www.smgov.net/uploadedFiles/Portals/UrbanForest/Renewal/CarobAssessment.pdf We need to be proactive and not wait until we have a death or serious accident.

Nick, This branch weighed several hundred pounds and was hung up 4' above the ground, and was directly beneath a tree that had become a safety hazard (they cut the entire tree down this morning). Bernie had a valid concern, and as someone who lives on Orchid, I had similar concerns. Imagine what would happen to us as private landowners if we left such a branch on our front yard and someone was hurt because of it. Like it or not, we live in a litigious society and although I probably would have been playing on it myself as a 12 year old, I understand the dangers which Bernie was pointing out.
