More Diapers Dumped in CdM, Police Say

UPDATED with information on the timing.

It’s been two dirty-diaper-free weeks in Corona del Mar — at least for those without babies — but the dirty diaper dumper struck again Thursday on East Coast Highway.

According to an online police log, illegal dumping occurred between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Thursday near East Coast Highway and Cameo Highlands Drive.

A Caltrans employee called police after receiving an email about the dumping, said Kathy Lowe, a Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman. Two soiled adult diapers were found in the westbound traffic lanes about 30 yards east of the Cameo neighborhood, she said. General Services staff were called and cleaned up the mess within an hour or two.

The dirty adult diapers have been dumped in that area sporadically for more than a year. Laguna Beach police also have had several regular reports about the dirty diapers, and two weeks ago, more diapers were dumped along MacArthur Boulevard near Harbor View Drive.

Police have investigated but said they likely would need to catch someone in the act before solving the case. Newport Beach’s municipal code prohibits throwing garbage on streets and in public places, and fines start at $100. Anyone with information should call Sgt. Shontel Sherwood at (949) 644-3775. If you notice diapers that need to be removed, you can call general services at (949) 644-3055.
