A woman who left a key under a front mat while on vacation returned and discovered someone had taken two diamond rings worth $20,500, according to police.

The burglary in the 2300 block of First Avenue occurred between 11 a.m. Sept. 13 and 6:30 a.m. Monday and was reported at 7:47 p.m. Monday, a report states.

The victim went out of town, and while she was gone had left a key under a mat for a friend who was welcome to enter the home, police said. When she returned home, nothing seemed out of place, but when she tried to find the rings to wear them, she discovered they were missing.

There were no signs of forced entry, police said. The burglary remains under investigation.

Obviously her friend had nothing to do with it, right? Hiding a key under the door mat, huh? Great idea. I'll have to remember that next time I am out of town.
