Reports of Gunshot Noise in CdM Unfounded, Police Say

A loud noise that sounded like gunfire woke several Corona del Mar residents early Saturday morning and resulted in at least six calls to police. But the calls were unfounded, police said.

“It was nothing,” said Lt. Evan Sailor. Officers searched the areas where reports were made and found nothing suspicious, he said. The noise was likely fireworks or a car backfiring.

One resident near Waterfront Drive said after the noise woke him from a sound sleep, he looked outside and saw a small white cloud that appeared to be smoke over Big Corona State Beach. The cloud dissipated in a few minutes, he said.

Online police logs show reports of shots fired from Bayside Drive and Goldenrod Avenue, the 700 block of Fernleaf Avenue, the 500 block of Dahlia Avenue, Goldenrod and Seaview avenues, the 1800 block of Marapata Drive and the 400 block of Carnation Avenue. The calls came in between 12:11 and 12:23 a.m.

I heard it. It wasn't gunshots, it was some sort of double explosion, possibly large (illegal) mortar style fireworks. Its hard to tell where it came from. It sounded like it was inland, but smoke over the beach sounds like fireworks. Either way it is another sign of how the neighborhood is losing control.

I was driving up the Fernleaf ramp from Bayside Drive toward Seaview shortly after midnight last night. I saw two bright flashes in my rearview mirror and immediately heard "BAM, BAM!" so loud that I thought the noise was coming from my trunk. My husband was driving ahead of me, perhaps 100 feet and did not see the flashes, but heard the noise. For Lt. Sailor to say "it was nothing" seems a little dismissive. It was definitely SOMETHING. You could smell it in the air after we parked at home. It wasn't a backfire, but I have no idea what gunpowder smells like.

I am live on goldenrod and heard it. It sounded like gun shots; not an explosion. I am not an expert but an explosion doesn't sounds as distinct as the sounds I heard last night.

I live on Acacia and Waterfront and heard a distinct, clear and sharp "BAM BAM", just like PMT had stated. I know the sound of fireworks and the sound of gunshots. It didn't sound like fireworks to me. Unfortunately, we hear fireworks too often in our once quiet and sleepy "Village" of Corona del Mar.

Does anyone else find it interesting that the exact same thing, at almost the exact same time, happened two months ago, almost to the day and again was "unfounded" http://www.coronadelmartoday.com/28544/home/mystery-noise-prompts-calls-to-police/
