An unexpected construction issue has closed the Central Library until 2 p.m. today, according to the library’s Facebook page.
A broken water sprinkler in the Children’s Room activated a fire alarm about 11:25 a.m., said Katherine Mielke, a library spokeswoman.
“The water sprinkler activated the fire alarm,” she said in an email. “Staff evacuated the building and contacted the Fire Department. The Fire Department identified the issue and the construction crew on hand for the expansion project repaired the sprinkler and is currently working on cleaning up the Children’s Room.”
Damage to library materials was minimal, the email said, but the Children’s Room will remain closed until carpets are dried and sanitized.
“The Central Library is currently closed due to an unexpected construction issue,” according to a Facebook post added about 12:45 p.m. “We apologize for any inconvenience! All other NBPL locations are open as usual.”
Later, another post said the library would reopen at 2 p.m. The Children’s Room, however, will be closed until further notice. The page suggests checking the library website for storytime schedule information. Also, Summer Reading Program prizes are available.
The library closed for two weeks in October as part of an expansion project that will connect the library with the new Civic Center; read that story here.
