Caltrans Adds Stripes to Limit Illegal Turns from Shake Shack

Caltrans crews today began adding striping to the median near the Shake Shack because of motorists making illegal left turns, a Caltrans official has confirmed.

A maintenance work order was submitted to install 800 feet of 12-inch yellow diagonal striping in the median, according to an email from David Richardson, a public information officer for Caltrans District 12.

Traffic Operations Engineering Group crews visited the location and made the striping recommendation after a complaint from a Corona del Mar resident, Richardson said. The resident said that Shake Shack customers regularly make left turns despite signs warning that left turns are not permitted.

“Sit there for two minutes, and you’ll see someone making that illegal turn,” the resident said.

The left turns have not caused traffic accidents or resulted in an unusual number of citations, Richardson said in a telephone interview.

The striping work will cost $2,163, Richardson said.

“This change is being made after a engineering assessment as well as our normal process of
responding to citizens concerns and requests when appropriate,” he said.

Oh goody, lines on the road will stop the scofflaws. We've seen how well that works keeping people from turning in to the shopping center. LOL At least some K rail would slow down all but the big SUV's. Isn't it odd how the Shake Shack wasn't a problem for 50 years until Ruby's took it over and started selling grease burgers. There's progress for ya. I can't wait till they get the alcohol license so we can go down there and get drunk too.

Jamie is correct. I was just their for dinner and saw a couple drive into the striped area and turn left into the Shake Shack. Maybe Caltrans can install a sign that says “Stay Out of Stripes, Even for Shakes.” Or the city can provide Caltrans with traffic spikes like we have in the Big Corona parking lot. The only problem with spikes is they may trip people like the family of six I saw run across the highway there this morning while the stripes were going in.
