Thief Nabs Car While Owner Helping Friends Unload Luggage

A man jumped into a Mercedes while its owner was helping friends unload luggage late Monday night — then drove away while witnesses watched in disbelief, a witness said.

“He was walking toward us on the sidewalk, coming up from ocean, and began going into street, which I thought was just crossing street,” a witness said in a message. “And then all of the sudden he jumped into our friend’s car and drove off.”

The incident occurred at 11:55 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of Marguerite Avenue, according to online police logs.

The suspect was a male with a buzz cut or crew cut and dark hair, about 5 feet 8 inches tall wearing jeans and a short sleeved blue shirt, the witness said. Corona del Mar Today typically does not name crime victims and witnesses.

The witness said her friend was giving her a ride home from the airport to save her taxi fare after a long weekend. They had unloaded their luggage from the trunk of the car, set it on the sidewalk and were hugging goodbye when the man jumped in the car and drove away.

The witness said a Newport Beach police officer spotted the car leaving Corona del Mar and chased it into Irvine, where the driver bolted.

“(T)hey recovered the car, but I think the guy got away,” the witness said. “He just left the car and started running. Unbelievable.”

Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said it was very unusual for witnesses to see someone actually stealing a vehicle, and that police immediately began looking for the suspect. An officer spotted the car northbound on Jamboree Road at East Coast Highway but lost sight of him at Michelson Drive, Lowe said. Eventually, the car was found unoccupied in a parking lot. Irvine and Newport Beach police officers, including a K-9 unit, searched the area but could not find the suspect.

The car was returned unharmed to the owner, Lowe said.

Police ask anyone who may have information about the suspect to call them at (949) 644-3717.

The crime is getting out of control. In nearly 50 years living in CdM I have never seen so much crime as in the past two years. Yet, I seldom see a cop car just cruising around. It is amazing and truly a feather in the cap of the police dept that they recovered this car at all, not to mention and so quickly and without damage. But the PD is IMHO severely undermanned. Maybe if the city wasn't having to pay for fire rings, and to clean up holiday trash left by out of town visitors or a fancy city hall there would be more money to protect residents from potentially violent crimes from people coming here to prey on us because they think we are all rich.

What a shame that the suspect got away...not surprising though. A Santa Ana or Costa Mesa cop would never have let a stolen vehicle suspect escape. And its such a rare occurence you think they'd put their all into catching such a brazen criminal. NBPD is embarrassing and frankly I feel a little less safe in my city now.

NBPD protects us daily from crimes far more devastating than this one. Jake's conclusions are dramatic and irresponsible. Santa Ana and Costa Mesa cops also have major crimes they must focus on over auto thefts, so not every pursuit has a full and completely satisfying conclusion. And, all PDs would love to have more resources to counter criminal acts. While no one likes to be robbed, no one was hurt here & the car was recovered. Enjoy your day in safe CdM!
