Holiday Visitors Leave Tons of Trash At Big Corona

Newport Beach crews removed 7.5 tons of trash from Big Corona State Beach the day after Independence Day, according to a city memo.

“In four hours on Thursday, 10 Field Maintenance crewmembers collected and removed over 7.5 tons of trash and other debris that had been left on the ground and in the beach area trash containers at the park,” the memo states.

July 5 is the biggest clean-up day for the year for the city’s Municipal Operations Department, the memo states.

“Staff started their shift at 5:00 am to remove signs, delineators, barricades, portable toilets, and to assist with beach clean-up,” the memo states.

In West Newport’s so-called party zone, 36 crew members carefully orchestrated cleanup of beaches, commercial districts and streets, the memo states.

“In addition to the numerous trash bags filled by litter pickers and community volunteers, mechanical street sweepers removed 12 cubic yards of debris from the West Newport-area streets alone,” the memo states. Last year, revelers left behind 13 cubic yards of trash.

The city hired contractors to aid with cleanup. The Rainbow Disposal company serviced all beach containers and picked up more than 14 tons of trash, the memo states.

The city’s Marine Operations division estimated that about 103,000 people visited beaches in Newport Beach on the Fourth of July, with thousands of other visitors in other areas of the city.

Thanks for this update. I called the city about a week ago because I noticed overflowing trash cans ... at 10:30 in the morning. There were small children playing on the grass area closest to the fire pits and ithe trash containers were so full that garbage was spread out on the grass. I walk my dog there almost every morning and I've never seen as much trash as this year. Glad to hear they hired contractors to help! By the way, we've seen a number of skunks and a few rats lately. They are having a feast at night. Animal control doesn't deal with skunks and the yummy garbage is a concern with the recent rabies scare.

The tourists bring traffic and parking congestion and lowered property values and leave nothing but their trash.

Jamie ... maybe you should move somewhere where "tourists" don't bother you so much. Like Nebraska or someplace like that.

Thank you Tony, its been at least a month since someone told me I should leave town for expressing an opinion and stating facts.

I just popped into the comments to see if i guessed correctly what Jamie would write on this one.... lol

What you people fail to understand is that if Jaime moved to Nebraska, hordes of tourists would not visit, Jaime would have nothing to complain about and that would make Jaime very sad and despondent. She's in the right place here in CDM for her happiness... it's just annoying for the rest of us who have to listen to her.

Jamie doesn't annoy me. I like reading the back and forth, it give me an occasional laugh... and don't mind differing opinions.

No problem Sandra, the message wasn't directed at you though. It was for Tony D. I was letting him know how things are handled around here as he seems to be new. Nobody who reads these comments on a semi-rgular basis bothers to tell Jaime she should leave town anymore. We've realized her ego just grows bigger and bigger every time someone says it, so what's the point!

Jamie has revealed herself as a property speculator, people who want to live in CdM welcome lower property values which result in lower property taxes.

Interesting that an article about trash draws all this personal commentary. I suppose these comments seem more lighthearted than some of the truly hateful comments made about the sharrows. Still, our little village (or at least the comments posted on this site) seem increasingly mean-spirited in making personal attacks.
