Newport Beach lifeguards will host their 27th annual blood drive from 2 to 8 p.m. today at their headquarters at the base of the Newport Pier.
Sixty spots remain open for donors. Members of the public may sign up to donate online or by calling (949) 673-3047. You will need to bring a photo identification to donate, organizers said in a statement.
“The Newport Lifeguards’ Blood Drive is annually the most successful lifeguard drive in Southern California,” the statement said. “Its success comes from the community’s generosity in supporting the program.”
Each year, the blood drive provides 100 units of blood or more that helps 300 patients. There are 120 openings for donors during this drive.
Blood donations cannot be stockpiled, with the shelf life ranging from a few hours for some cells to 42 days for others. Blood donations must be made on a regular basis in order to maintain an adequate supply in the community. Blood is used every day to treat cancer patients, surgical patients, burn patients, people with blood diseases and victims of traumatic injuries.
