Newport Beach lifeguards twice on Saturday assisted boats that needed tows, officials confirmed today.

One incident occurred about 3:30 p.m., when lifeguards were called to a boat too close to the rocks off Arch Rock, said Jennifer Schulz, a Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman.

“The Corona del Mar Rescue boat raced to the area and found three individuals on a small boat approximately 10 yards from the reef and rocks area,” Schulz said in an email. “The lifeguard deckhand swam to the boat and attempted to swim the boat out, but needed additional assistance from the rescue boat.”

Because the boat had been experiencing mechanical difficulties, Schulz said, lifeguards towed it to the Harbor Patrol docks.

Later in the day on Saturday, a personal watercraft got too close to shore and experienced mechanical failure when kelp went into the boat’s impeller, Schulz said. The Corona del Mar rescue boat towed the vessel from the area, she said.
