Newport Beach police issued 161 citations and 52 warnings to distracted drivers during a monthlong crackdown in April.

The Newport Beach Police Department was participating in a statewide zero tolerance campaign that coincided with Distracted Driving Awareness month; read our story here.

In April, officers issued 161 citations for drivers using handheld phones and to drivers younger than 18 years old who were using phones while driving, said Kathy Lowe, a police department spokeswoman.

Offices issued four citations for driving while texting, and they issued 52 warnings, Lowe said.
