The Newport Beach Police Department today issued a description of a suspected burglar who broke into a Shore Cliffs home in the middle of the day on March 31.

The burglar entered the home in the 100 block of Shorecliff Road through an open window between 1:45 and 2:04 p.m. and stole a laptop and gift cards, according to a police Nixle alert sent today.

A surveillance camera on the property captured images of the man and showed him coming out of the window holding a white bag, police said.

The man was wearing dark clothing and a black baseball cap with white letters that spelled “DC.” He was seen driving a black vehicle visible in one of the photos.

The week of that burglary, two other crimes occurred in the Shore Cliffs neighborhood, including a theft from an unlocked vehicle and a stolen car; read our story here.

Police ask anyone with information about the suspect, or any other suspicious activity, to call them at (949) 644-3717.

The Nixle alert also included safety tips including closing and locking all doors and windows; using a deadbolt on all exterior doors; activate alarms if you have an alarm system; using a timer to turn interior and exterior lights off and on; asking a trusted friend or neighbor to check your home when on vacation, or sign up for a vacation check by police volunteers on the police website.

Homeowners’ patterns and vulnerabilities to theft are known to the throngs of service workers who visit Corona del Mar every day. No home in CdM is complete without a score of gardeners, spa cleaners, window washers, house cleaners, dog walkers, painters, massage therapists, etc. The list goes on and on. Most service workers do not exploit others’ vulnerabilities to theft, but some do. How long does it take for someone to figure out you leave a window cracked for air and your laptop is always on the table? One bad apple tells his friend, and BAM! Friend drives by, climbs in your window, grabs your laptop and bye-bye baby as you cry about your lost stuff. Or worse yet, your neighbors’ stuff gets stolen, too.
