A 3.9 magnitude earthquake centered near San Juan Capistrano struck at 10:37 a.m. today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Residents in Corona del Mar and Newport Beach reported feeling the jolt, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

Newport Beach Fire Department officials used the quake as a reminder of an earthquake and tsunami awareness workshop scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the OASIS Senior Center.

“The workshop will also cover how the City will respond to unexpected earthquake and tsunami threats, as well as what residents can do to prepare themselves for these potentially catastrophic events,” said Jennifer Schulz, a department spokeswoman, in an email. The workshop is free, and no advance registration is necessary.

And that's why, as a CA native, I cannot bring myself to hang picture frames on the wall above my bed.
