Missing Man Flyover Startles CdM Residents

UPDATED to add comments from the mayor and another city official, and to clarify that there could have been a second set of planes.

Four planes flew at low altitude over Lower Buck Gully at about 6 p.m. tonight, dipping and buzzing the ground below, and then one of the planes suddenly veered toward the ocean in a missing-man-formation maneuver.

The Newport Beach Police Department’s phones immediately began to ring with residents wondering about the planes, said a dispatcher.

The planes, she said, were military planes performing the missing man maneuver as part of a funeral or memorial service.

Mayor Nancy Gardner said the planes were f 18s, and that apparently a permit had been issued for the flyover about two weeks ago, apparently to a local yacht club. But despite the permit being issued, she said, nobody was notified. The permits were not issued by the City of Newport Beach, City Manager Dave Kiff said, but rather the FAA.

“I thought it was going to crash into my house,” she said. “Why nobody was notified, we don’t know.”

Some residents said their windows rattled. Later two planes circled above the Corona del Mar area several times before flying southward away from the area.

Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol employees said the noise was extremely loud, but they had not been advised about the event.

I along with a lot of neighbors also ran out of our houses because of the loud noise. Now that I know it was for a Memorial or something of that nature I am thinking about the military person that was lost and wish their family and loved ones comfort. Thank you also for the quick response online.

The photographed planes aren't F18's. F18's have twin tails, swept wings, and two turbojet engines.

We live on the Peninsula and they were no more than 500 ft about our homes. This is way below the deck. It scared the heck out of neighbors as we live in the JWA flight path. We support the missing man tribute but what happened today was dangerous and unacceptable.

Those are Training Planes. The ceremony was for John "Jack" Callahan, Marine Pilot in WW II. There where 4 F/A 18's performing the missing man flyover.

There is a lot of confusion. What planes are those?

I believe there were two different sets of planes that flew over. First sets were jets the second sets were older fixed wings. The first sets were really noisey with just one loud pass over and went into the sky and did not return., the second sets were not that noisey and made several passovers.I salute the recognition for the display and its reason. Am I correct?

The low altitude manner in which these fighter jets flew over my neighborhood gave all the signs and signals of military engagement. I thought there might have been a terrorist incident in progress. Short of any advance notice of this, and with the very low manner in which they flew, I felt this was done in poor judgement. The fact that some government official approved it doesn't make it right. Just imagine if a private citizen ever did something like this!

Jack Callahan braved a lot more than loud noises to ensure that we have the opportunity today to post our thoughts in a free press. I want to thank those pilots and plane owners that have spent hours and small fortunes keeping those vintage planes in Bristol condition as a memorial to all those that have served.

Fabulous to see and hear our air force yesterday. Now that we know why it was for a memorial service to a veteran makes it that much more special. Anyone complaining about it knowing this is an idiot

Scared the heck out of us. We ran outside thinking a plane was in distress. Millions of people have served our country. This was a very inconsiderate thing to do over a neighborhood

It was very exciting to see the flyover. What a special moment for the family and friends of a special person. The people that were offended by this display of patriotism for a great man that served our country are the so-called Americans that offend many of us. Three cheers for the family that arranged such a wonderful tribute for a wonderful individual!

All we are saying is that the citizens should have had some warning prior to the flyover. We're not a bunch of pansies as a previous poster said. It's our community too. I think it was a great tribute, but a little warning would have been effective. Enough said on my part.,

what a wonderful memorial salute to Jack Callahan who served our country in a time of war. IThe roar of the planes reminds us how grateful we are to all our military near and far away, serving and protecting our nation and our freedoms!

"Extremely Loud" I seriously doubt the noise was extreme. Very loud perhaps as those appear to be T6's and they tend to make quite a bit of noise. Extreme? nah...
