Le Petit Bateau Opens in Corona del Mar

EDITED to clarify that the restaurant’s pastry chef is not a full-time staff member.

Corona del Mar’s newest eatery opened this week in the former Pizza Royale space, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as European pastries and gourmet chocolates.

Le Petit Bateau opened Monday at 3330 East Coast Highway, and already fans were raving about the fare.

“They brought me samples, and they were all excellent,” said Gunars Bundza, a Bank of America parking lot attendant. “They are priced reasonably and they have everything — sandwiches, breakfast, soup even.”

Owner Kamran Khadivi of Dana Point said he spent two years traveling in Europe and researching the kind of restaurant he wanted to open with his son, general manager Kam Khadivi, who lives in Corona del Mar.

“I traveled internationally as a businessman, and I knew I liked the food of the southwestern part of France and Corsica,” he said. “I wanted to bring that to America.”

Khadivi Sr. said that Corona del Mar needed a European-style bistro and bakery.

“The clientele are very sophisticated and cosmopolitan,” he said.

Kam Khadivi said the restaurant was “a French bistro cafe and patisserie.” Lionel Uddipa is chef, and pastry Louise Chien supplies pastries.

Breakfast options range from $5.95 for a croissant egg sandwich to $10.95 for an assortment of meat, cheese, breads, jams and honey. Lunches include soups, salads and sandwiches, and pastas, pizzas and flatbread dishes also are on the menu. Le Petit Bateau is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The restaurant replaces Pizza Royale, which closed Dec. 31 after 24 years in business; read our story here.

It's a shame they have an ugly sign. Doesn't remind me at all of a French brasserie...

I think the name translates to small boat, but I don’t speak French and I have never been to France. I have been to Canada. Weren’t the Coneheads from France? “We come from France.” The croissant egg sandwich sounds good. I rode by today and saw Eddie Haskell’s sister Sandie dining next to the window, so it must be good.

Matt, did I insult your graphic design skills? I just think it is crazy that they spent 2 years in Europe researching and come back with this sort of cafeteria looking restaurant. Did they not see how all the patisseries and brasseries look in France? I admire the idea to open a French cafe but I just wished it was better executed.

I went there for lunch. I had the most amazing turkey and swiss panini. The Macarons and the Chocolates were also some of the best I have had in a LONG time. A pasta dish and a pizza passed my table, the ladies next to me said "they were really impressed". Plus, I have to admit, the staff was very friendly, that's hard to find in CDM. Overall I'd give this place a thumbs up.

I just spent $15 for a burnt latte ($2.65) a flavorless doughy scone ($3.00) and a mixed berry granola bowl ($7.95) consisting of Greek yogurt, blueberries ( only) and what I believe to be commercially made granola. There are better places in town to enjoy breakfast...

yes, the sign makes the place look very cheap and nothing like a French brasserie...it's actually quite the eyesore. but abotu the food, the main thing: I wasn't impressed with the quality. the macarons are simply the wrong color to be natural (and taste bla) and generally it's supermarket level, not patisserie. i am french, so have some comparison point. disappointed. :(
