A standing-room crowd watched as Newport Beach Fire Chief Scott Poster was sworn in at a City Hall ceremony this morning.
“I’m honored to lead the men and women of the Newport Beach Fire Department,” Poster said after he took the oath in the short ceremony.
Firefighters and lifeguards, along with Police Chief Jay Johnson, Mayor Nancy Gardner, Council members Rush Hill and Mike Henn and other city officials attended the ceremony held in Council Chambers. CIty Manager Dave Kiff welcomed everyone.
“We kept looking around the management team room, and all that was missing was the fire chief, and we are glad you are here,” Kiff said.
Poster began work in Newport Beach on Feb. 6 and immediately started tackling the new state fire maps; read our earlier story here.
He most recently served as deputy chief for the Los Angeles County Fire Department and has more than 30 years’ experience. As Newport Beach’s fire chief, Poster oversees a department of 136 sworn and 13 non-sworn full-time employees and 200 seasonal employees in three major department divisions including fire operations, fire administration and fire prevention.
His wife, Barbara, participated in the ceremony, pinning his new badge as the audience clapped.
After the ceremony, Poster posed for photographs and attendees mingled and snacked on donuts, cookies, coffee and juice.
Poster replaced former Fire Chief Steve Lewis, who retired in February 2010. The city has had two interim chiefs since then: Steven E. Parker and Mike Morgan. Most recently, Ralph Restadius was acting chief; read our earlier story here.
