Editor’s Note

In my 25 years as a working journalist, I’ve always believed that reporters should not take sides and should be transparent about personal choices to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

That’s why, after struggling to figure out the best way to handle this, I am writing this editor’s note to let all my readers know that I am going to see President Obama on Thursday in Corona del Mar.

This involved payment of $2,500 to his campaign, along with acceptance that I am there as a guest and not a reporter. There’s a press pool, and I’ll have access to the story the pool provides. But reporters like me are not invited to attend, and the president’s press people in Chicago called me to make sure I understood their rules.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to play by those rules, and I considered skipping the event entirely. In the end, my husband pushed me to attend this function. He’d met President Clinton and remembers it as significant event. Also, it’s very close to home. It seems special, and now that I’m committed, I’m looking forward to it.

I’ve hired a freelancer to cover the protests, counter protests and the general scene outside. (But if you’re there, send photos and comments — please!)

There’s the question about whether journalists should avoid making campaign contributions or doing other things (signing petitions for example) that could show bias. I largely agree with those as general rules.

But in this case, my choice really is less about me declaring political support of Obama and more about me simply wanting to attend an event out of curiosity and sense of history.

Many of you might think this post is overkill, that it’s my business, or that it doesn’t matter. Others might think my attending the event is not appropriate.

However, when covering a recent story about Republicans planning a protest the day of the president’s visit, I let my sources know of my plans. It’s not a secret, nor do I think it has tainted any of my coverage. But I realized that if I need to tell my sources about my plans, that my readers also should have full disclosure to make of it what they will.

No hidden agenda here. Just me, balancing work and life, and trying hard to be open, honest, and most of all, transparent.

I think it makes you human.

I can relate to wanting to attend 'an event out of curiosity and a sense of history'. I stood in line for hours to see George W. Bush once when he spoke in Irvine. His legacy is something I have many concerns about, but the experience of that day I will not soon forget.

I give you credit for the post, and I honestly hope the experience and payment of $2500 is worth it. The days of unbiased journalism are gone and have been for a while, so no matter. If there is a way to arrange a meeting with you before you go in, I'll give you a copy of the Constitution and maybe you could slip in the President's coat pocket?

I have never respected you more. I believe in honesty, genuine interest and love for learning about our world. I would go and see any political candidate merely out of interest and never to disrespect their followers. I'll be out there waving to our president and can't wait to hear about your breakfast. I'm sorry you have had to defend your journalism credibility this week but I read this site's news daily and have never felt it leaned any way except towards informing me about the things that are important in Corona del Mar.

The bigger story is the President of the United States of America and his opposition are whoring themselves out across the country. What a racket.

In the who we are section you set yourself to the standard of upholding the journalist code. In my opinion through your disclosure you have done that. I on the other hand will continue my support of Ron Paul.

Thank you for your honesty. That being said, how can you support Obama for President, when he has failed at every promise he has maid to the American people ? 1. Obama 2008 "pledged the cut the deficeit in half by the end of his frist term". His most recent budget will add 26 Trillion to deficeit by 2022. Grade F 2. Obama promissed that unemployment would not go above 8% under his presidency. He will have the highest sustained unemployement since the great depression. 3. He promissed "shovel ready jobs", and forced to cancel "recovery summer" Grade F 4. Obama promissed Healthcare cost would not go up. Grade F 5. Obama promissed to close Gitmo Grade F 6. Obama promissed to unite us and instead has launched a class warefare campain. Grade F 7. Obama promissed not to take pac money Grade F Absolutely nothing has gotten better under his presidency, and I cannot understand why anyone can support him at this time. He has a record and he cannot escape it. Maybe you could pose few of these issues to him over your champagne & eggs.

Well, now... this is an interesting dilemma. You are a respected journalist with impeccable credentials. You've chosen to fork over $2,500 to Obama in order to attend the meeting and have agreed to leave "yourself" outside. I admire you for your candor and I'm going to be VERY interested to see if you can avoid commenting about your experience behind the veil Thursday. It's going to be a VERY big day for you - how do you not tell your readers about the experience? I'm just not sure how that "journalist" pulls this off. Have a great time!

I am not a supporter of Obama, but I applaud your honesty and curiosity, have a lovely time. I once saw Hillary Clinton in person and it was a moment I won't forget.

Editor, I wish I could go see Obama, but I am not in town. Can you do me a favor? Ask him if he, Michelle and the girls will take the Goldenrod chickens, as they sadly have an eviction notice...... The chickens would go great with the organic garden Michelle has growing..... Our chickens will be famous and we could all go and visit them....

Lots of journalists attend such events, and some are even Democrats. ;-) I see no problem, have fun. I used to surf with former Gov Wilson in San Diego and as Gov I would see him from time to time as an old acquaintance when I was a journalist. I also photographed George Bush Sr and Pres Clinton as a journalist. I'm going to sleep through this one and save my money for a new monster truck with a bicycle catcher on the bumper. Have fun! LOL .

I always appreciate good honest Journalism. However I have a problem when it involves having to donate to a campaign to actually be part of your Journalism. I happen to be very against the Obama administration. Many of the reasons is his promises are empty, and he escalated Bush's wars into 6 countries, raised Bush's debt ceiling 4 times. And has knowledge that his unemployment numbers are actually 22.5% The fact that a $2500 campaign donation was mandatory to proceed with your Journalism means you actually gave money to help a President possibly win a re election and continue to take America down the wrong path. Hope that money was worth it. You could of fed at least 100 homeless people who actually needed the money more then the president does and walked away with a better sense of knowing you helped people.

To assume a journalist should be a-political is both unrealistic and an insult to their intelligence. Your curiousity and transparency, whatever your political stance, is to be commended. Thank you. I will now start reading your publication, of which I was not aware, with the confidence that it's edited by someone with integrity.

I appreciate the disclosure as on a national level journalists have an approval rating lower than the president! That distrust has been earned over time from what citizens see as agenda driven news. You are a gem to our local community and we are lucky to have you!!! Part of what keeps our liberty is a Free Press. It is imperative that the press is given access and is not censored by the Government. I am assuming that no one is looking over your back. Right?!

I am encouraged by your attempt at "transparency". However I am discouraged that that you seem to be writing off the $2,500 as strictly the cost of an experience rather than a real support of most things Obama. So I accept your explanation for the most part and now also understand that you are another liberal writer among the thousands that control our news and information highway. The difference is you live in a true conservative community. And for the record my assumption of your political association goes past Obama and to your financial support of Hillary Clinton in 2008. As a long time resident of CDM I was looking for some local color as our own Daily Pilot has been hijacked by yet another propaganda organ. Just an extension of the LA Times trying to reach into our great community with their left leaning ideas. Your site has gained followers of this community and I will attest has been pretty free of politics and when disputes entered the debate you did a fair job of moderation and kept the balance. I will say however in your attempt at transparency you have opened up a bit more than you know. Being that we now know much more about the editor and her point of view. As we all know we are a very divided nation. One more in my opinion under this President. Race and class warfare are his friends. I believe the American people are much better than that. But rhetoric like Obama's fuels these fires. I despise these action among many by the sitting President. I spent some time today finding out more about you. I figured here is someone in my community whom has a voice. We the longtime Californians, residents of Corona del Mar, welcome you yet many of us would remind you that the man whom in which today you chose to fiscally support shares little knowledge of what has made our town the greatest place on earth.

You are a person first, a reporter second. It's what you do, not who you are. I appreciate your wanting us all to know that and I look forward to following your posts.

Amy, you are truly a journalist in the best sense of the word. Journalists are not meant to be superhuman - they are entitled to political views and moral observations on their own time - but must be above all professional in their job. Your disclosure represents that highest level of professionalism.

So CDM is a "true conservative community" because Jay T says it is ... and you get the impression from reading his post that Jay T always thinks Jay T is 100% right on. Do you have any facts to support your position Jay T? My wife and I live in CDM and we are not conservative, so there's two votes against you. Furthermore, how can a person who spews rhetoric about "liberals" controlling "our news and information highway" turn around and call out the President for using divisive language? Jay T, when did your brain become a wholly owned subsidiary of FOX NEWS CORP?

Jay T

February 16th, 2012

Regarding Jaspers post..... For the past 40 years that I have lived, been schooled and voted in this community the answer would be an overwhelming YES. Not just because I say it is but history shows this from the earliest days of our village when those who came here in the 20's and 30's were from the east side of Los Angeles, the more conservative areas of Pasadena, South Pasadena and San Marino. My point was that these people of more conservative beliefs in individualism, liberty, free markets, limited government prospered for their people and built great places to live. That is what built this town as well as this country. Jasper and let me say that nothing is 100% however a voter registration of over 2-1 in our political system is what one would call "true". I can't believe you would want to challenge this by claiming you need facts. If you did any research on your area you would see most facts if not all are on my side. So Jasper show me some facts to dispute what I stated outside of you and your wife voting history! And please do not resort to name calling and throwing out FOX NEWS as a defense. Childish. Can you name your representatives? Can you name them for the past few decades? Are they Democrats or Republicans Jasper? Do you know your congressional PVI number? It's R+8 Jasper. Jasper?

This is no surprise to anyone as a member of the media of course you are in the tank for Obama only difference from most journalists is that you have a rich husband and that is part of the 1%. I love what you have created with Corona del Mar today it is awesome! I take it you didn't get any handouts from the governement, you don't wait for anyone to break the story instead you take iniative and you used individual effort personal responsibility to create a brand that is helpful and useful to the public. Since you were so open an honest with your post about going you should make sure you tell Char's story about how the children of Harbor view were denied a visit by the President during black history month when he was just minutes away.

February 16th, 2012

Jay T, by "community" did you mean the entire 48th Congressional District? Silly me, I thought you were talking about CDM seeing as how you are posting on a local paper site that only covers CDM. Yes, I will freely grant you that the 48th District as a whole is a conservative place. No argument there. However, certain "communities" within the 48th tend to be less conservative and I would count Laguna Beach and CDM in that category. As for your other charges, the day you stop using the word "liberal" as a pejorative term is the day that I will stop making fun of your conservative beliefs.

Please don't take any of the negative comments personally. If any of us had the opportunity to meet ANY president, I think we would. Can't wait to hear your story. You will always hear comments like "Did you tell him this or that?" Why didn't he stop by Harbor View School?" There will always be people who will try to find a negative, any negative, if their minds and hearts are closed no matter what "side" you belong to. You rock!

February 16th, 2012

Jasper.... A huge LOL @ "less conservative" as your argument......! Bwahahahaaaa!

Honestly Jay T, as the one who chided me for being childish your response is a tad juvenile. Yes, yes I saw your post on the other thread too. You can stop posting it, we all get it, you think Newport is the "greatest, best [community] God has ever given man on the face of the earth". And if Jay T thinks it, then by darnit, it must be true!
