A cigarette butt caused a fire in a large trash can at East Coast Highway and Goldenrod Avenue on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred at 4:13 p.m., and firefighters extinguished the fire and found the butt near the area of origin, said Jennifer Schulz, a Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman.
Also this weekend, police arrested a 41-year-old Laguna Beach woman after she twice made room service charges that she couldn’t pay for at the Marriott Hotel at 900 Newport Center Drive, police said.
The woman was a hotel guest when she made room service charges that she didn’t have means to pay, said Kathy Lowe, a Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman.
“She was asked to leave the hotel and not return,” Lowe said. But the woman did return and made more charges and left without paying, Lowe said. She was arrested on suspicion of commercial burglary at 7:28 p.m. Sunday.
Also this weekend, police arrested three people in Corona del Mar on suspicion of disorderly conduct while intoxicated, according to arrest reports. A 37-year-old Newport Beach man was arrested at 1:50 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Iris Avenue; a 25-year-old San Bernardino man was arrested at 7:15 p.m. Sunday at Jasmine Avenue and Ocean Boulevard; and a 25-year-old San Bernardino man was arrested at the same location at 7:44 p.m. Sunday. Bail for each was $500, reports said.
Police arrested a 20-year-old Laguna Niguel man at 8:50 a.m. Sunday on suspicion of DUI in the 1300 block of Bayside Drive; bail was $2,500, according to a report.
Police also arrested a man this morning near Big Corona State Beach after receiving a call about 7 a.m. of a petty theft of a bottle of liquor at Albertsons at 3049 East Coast Highway. Officers saw a man matching the suspect description and after determining that he was the suspect, arrested him on suspicion of petty theft, Lowe said.
