CERT Dinner Held at OASIS Center

The Fourth Annual State of CERT dinner and awards banquet was held Friday evening at the OASIS Senior Center.

CERT, which stands for Community Emergency Response Team, is a program run by the Newport Beach Fire Department that trains members of the community so they can help officials in case of emergency.

The award winners included Nancy Moran-Sanchez, who was named Newport Beach Fire Department CERT Volunteer of the Year; Fire Engineer Alan Baker, who was named Kevin Pryor Memorial CERT Instructor of the Year; and Peter Grigonis, who earned the Newport Beach Fire Department Spirit of CERT Award.

The Newport Beach Fire Department CERT Neighborhood of the Year was Broadmoor Hills Home Owners Association, led by Rita Berdelis and Christine Broaddus, and Granville Home Owners Association, led by Pamela Spears.

Retired Newport Beach Fire Captain Jerry Strom gave the keynote address, discussing the NBFD’s 100-year history. The event also included an overview of the CERT program, accomplishments from 2011 and goals for this year.
