Our reader comment of the week this week came from Jamie, writing in response to Frank Peter’s Cycling Safety column that mentioned bike signs on the Goldenrod Footbridge.
Jamie wrote, “Frank, its obvious you haven’t lived in CDM very long. If you want to know something check over at the Sherman Library or ask me, or Nancy Gardner, or any number of people who’ve lived here awhile. We will tell you things like why the footbridge sign is there. It is there because back in the 1960’s there was a LOT of kids who lived in CDM. As a result kids rode bikes over the footbridge, some rode motorcycles or mopeds. Yes. Motorcycles. Well the powers that be at the time decided that wasn’t safe, so they put up the “walk your bikes” sign. A couple of bridge remodels ago the sign was removed and never replaced, along with the posts that used to keep motorcycles and mopeds off the bridge. Kind of like the no bikes sign on the Fernleaf ramp it just sort of disappeared. And BTW people – stop telling other people to move if you don’t like what they say. Even newcomers (that would be anyone not born here) are entitled to their opinion.”
