CdM Library Closing for Three Weeks

Corona del Mar’s public library branch is turning 50 years old this summer, and the city is planning a weeklong celebration. But to get ready for the party, the library will be closed from July 7 to July 27, so it’s time to make plans to pick up requests and return your books to another branch.

The village library actually dates to the late 1940s, when librarians worked out of a storefront and later two schools in order to offer services to Corona del Mar residents. The Friends of the Library group was founded in 1957, and fundraising began to get a CdM branch built. Two years later on July 28, the city opened the doors to the Marigold Avenue branch.

Recently some city workers have proposed closing the branch because of declining numbers of users. The fire station next door needs remodeling and expansion, and there had been discussions of using the library site for the fire station project.

But residents spoke out against these plans, and City Councilwoman Nancy Gardner said this spring that instead, the branch would be revamped, with more children’s books and more late hours to accommodate those who want to use the space to study.

The library’s golden anniversary will feature book groups, special performers and reading times. For more information about the celebration, or to see old photos and read more history, visit this library website.
