Police Called to CdM For Illegal Peddling Days Before “Do Not Solicit” Registrations Expire

Newport Beach police received five calls Wednesday evening in Corona del Mar for illegal peddling, likely the work of the same group of solicitors.

“With that many solicitation calls in one area I think it’s safe to say that they were all part of a group that was working in the area,” said Kathy Lowe, a Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman.

The first call was reported at 5:34 p.m. in the 200 block of Evening Canyon Road. Other calls were reported in the 100 block of Shorecliff Road, in the 600 and 700 block of Jasmine Avenue and in the 700 block of Begonia Avenue, according to online logs. At least one of the calls involved a man who said he ignored the homeowner’s No Solicitors sign because he wasn’t selling anything but rather seeking donations — which city code defines as soliciting if the homeowner has displayed a sign and signed up for the Do Not Solicit online registry.

The calls came within days of that registry expiring on Dec. 31. The City created list in response to citizens who wanted limits on hours that solicitors could ring their bells. In Corona del Mar, many residents complained about aggressive solicitors, including City Councilwoman Nancy Gardner. The city activated the online list in May 2010, but residents must sign up each year to avoid legal challenges to the list.

To sign up for 2012, wait until Sunday or later and click here. As of today, about 900 homeowners have signed up.

Police have said that although some solicitors are legitimate and have permits, many actually could be criminals who are casing homes.
