Warm, sunny weather led to crowded and busy beaches over the weekend, Newport Beach Fire Department officials said on Monday.

On Saturday, 85,000 people hit local beaches, with lifeguards making ten rescues and attendance taking 696 preventative actions, said Jenn Schulz, a fire and lifeguard spokeswoman. On Sunday, crowds reached 80,000 with 39 rescues and 672 preventative actions taken. The crowds were up nearly double from last weekend when the rain, June Gloom and cooler weather kept a lot of people indoors.

Police officials said there were numerous reports of lost children, all of whom were reunited with family without further incident.

Also, about 10 a.m. Sunday, lifeguards assisted three boaters off the Corona del Mar south jetty after their boat flipped, Schulz said. The men were in a small boat, and when it flipped they swam to the jetty to wait for help. Lifeguards and the Harbor Department assisted the three men safely off of the rocks with no serious injuries.
