Man Loses More than $1 million in Identity Theft Case

A man relocating to Newport Beach from South Africa told police that someone stole more than $1 million from his bank accounts, police officials said on Monday.

The man, 50, is from Johannesburg and is in the process of moving to Newport Beach, said police Lt. Craig Fox. He told police on Saturday afternoon that sometime between June 8 and June 25, someone had accessed his bank account and transferred large amounts of money. A police report listed the loss at $1,095,000. Fox said the report is listed as an identity theft and that the loss stemmed from fraudulent manipulation of his account with a Newport Beach bank. The victim lives on Bayside Drive, records show.

In other police news, a 34-year-old Aliso Viejo man was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct/intoxication just after midnight Sunday at Narcissus Avenue and East Coast Highway. His bail was set at $500. Also, a man was arrested just before 1 a.m. Sunday in the same location on suspicion of possession of narcotics/controlled substance; his bail was set at $20,000. And on Friday afternoon, a man was arrested on suspicion of obstructing an officer at Ocean Boulevard and Jasmine Avenue; his bail was set at $20,000. And on Thursday, a 61-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol at MacArthur Boulevard and San Joaquin Hills Road; his bail was set at $2,500.
