Hitting A Car. With Hands.

Yesterday, I was trying to make a right turn onto Coast Highway during a busy time of the afternoon.

The turn was difficult, not just because of the heavy flow of traffic but also because it was at a location where it’s tough to see if cars are coming. So I was looking to the left, checking out the flow of cars that seemed never ending, when a man running with his dog hit the hood of my car several times with his hands.

“Look both ways!” he said to me. And of course he’s right. One should always look both ways before turning. I know this. I’ve covered accidents where people have been injured because a driver looking only for cars made a turn and smashed into someone. A friend of mine was seriously injured when this happened to her a few years ago.

So I appreciated him making sure I knew he was there.

However.

The traffic at that moment in time was so heavy that I was not making my turn. The pedestrian could easily have walked around me, or waited. I realize that he was playing it safe, and for that I am glad. Maybe I wouldn’t have remembered to look both ways.

I suppose I was bothered by the aggressive hitting my car with his hands before I really did anything wrong. I get that he was making sure he was safe, but I think it’s wrong to hit someone’s car and accuse them of being unsafe before they actually did anything unsafe.

I am very glad the man made it with his dogs safely in front of my car. But I’m not sure I like his style.
