Council to Reconsider San Miguel Pedestrian Bridge at Civic Center

The Newport Beach City Council could decide to add a $2 million pedestrian bridge to the Civic Center project at meeting set for 7 p.m. tonight, according to the agenda.

The pedestrian bridge would cross over San Miguel Drive and connect the north and central portions of a park that is part of the Civic Center project.

“At the time of the contract approval, City Council elected to defer the addition of the pedestrian bridge alternative with the plan to revisit this decision if project savings and/or the preservation of the construction contingencies could be accomplished,” according to a staff report included with the Council agenda.

Construction has progressed to the point where uncertainty about cost increases is no longer a major concern, the report states.

“Staff and the design team are confident that the project has passed through these critical periods successfully and relatively unscathed,” the report states. “Looking forward, at least one other item remains with cost-related uncertainty (installation of the glass curtain walls), but as that nears, the construction management team’s comfort grows.”

The funds to build the bridge would come from the builder’s construction contingency and the City’s owner contingency. The builder, C.W. Driver, will “give up” a $250,000 share in potentially saved contingency, the report states, making the net cost of the bridge $1.75 million. Click here to read the staff report in its entirety.

The Council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall at 3300 Newport Blvd. The public is welcome and may make comments. The meeting also will be streamed live on the city’s website.
