Left Turn Signals to Be Installed at Marguerite, Coast Highway

Drivers turning from Marguerite Avenue onto East Coast Highway soon will have a dedicated green arrow signal, the president of the Corona del Mar Residents Association said at the group’s November board meeting.

Currently, there are left-turn signals for motorists on East Coast Highway turning onto Marguerite Avenue but not for motorists on Marguerite, who must yield to Coast Highway traffic.

Newport Beach traffic engineers also plan to add a countdown to the pedestrian signal, said CdMRA President Karen Tringali.

Newport Beach Traffic Engineer Tony Brine said the project will be put out for bids in the spring.

“We are currently completing plans for the signal modification work which will provide for protected left turn arrows on both northbound and southbound Marguerite Avenue,” he said in an email. “We will be including the count-down pedestrian heads in the bid contract. The goal for installation is prior to summer next year.”

Tringali said the CdMRA group has asked for the turn signal and countdown feature for years.

“It’s always on our list,” she said. “We were very glad to hear this news.”

that'll be appreciated in the summer months when beach traffic is departing and turning left onto Coast Hwy. Cars are often backed up to Seaview because of congestion when turning left.

Having first hand experience as a pedestrian who has nearly been hit by confused motorists making left hand turns from Marguerite onto PCH on multiple occasions over the years, this is very good news.

Riding my bicycle through the intersection on Marguerite toward the beach is a balky proposition. Motorists coming the other direction make left turns in front of me as if they are assuming I will be making a right turn onto westbound Coast Highway. I can't say exactly what causes this, but it does seem as if the motorists are "surprised" I am going straight through the intersection. In other words, I do not sense the motorists are being aggressive. If I had to guess what they are thinking, I would say it appears as if the through lane is I am in is a right-turn lane, because it is against the curb, has a right-turn arrow which may be more visible than the through-arrow and the left-turn-only lane is where a through lane usually is situated (see the markings). Just an awkward intersection altogether. I hope the new signals help.

This has always been an akward intersection, with the "ONLY and OK" lanes on Marguerite being different from the usual, (right lane should turn right, and left lane should have the option of left or straight) let's hope this will help smooth the traffic.
