Newport Beach police have arrested a 44-year-old Beaumont man in connection with a burglary of a gym locker at the Island Hotel Spa, according to a statement.

The man was arrested about 4:30 p.m. Friday when police stopped his bus at Newport Center and Santa Barbara drives. Officers received a call about a man inside the Marriott Hotel who had asked to make a spa appointment and use the restroom. An employee denied the man access to the spa, recognizing him as a possible suspect in a Sept. 11 burglary at the Island Hotel Spa. After that incident, Newport Beach police alerted nearby businesses of the suspect’s description and method of gaining access to the spa.

“The employee denied him access to the spa and he immediately left the hotel,” the police statement said. The employee saw the suspect board the bus, and police stopped the bus and made the arrest without incident.

Police say the man is suspected of burglarizing the gym locker and later using credit cards taken in the burglary to purchase items at a store in Fashion Island.

The investigation is ongoing, and investigators believe the suspect may be responsible for several other similar crimes in the area. Anyone with information should call Det. Brad Miller at (949) 644-3767.
