Newport Beach police are investigating three burglaries from vehicles Saturday afternoon in the Fashion Island area, according to reports.

The burglaries all occurred late Saturday and involved the theft of navigation systems, said Kathy Lowe, a Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman.

One case occurred between 5:10 and 5:40 p.m. at 601 Newport Center Drive when the suspect punched the door lock on the driver’s door and took the navigation system worth $1,500. A police report said that damage to the car was $1,000.

Another case occurred between 4:30 and 6 p.m. at 1010 Newport Center Drive. Again, the suspect punched the driver’s door lock and took a navigation system and third-row seat valued at $2,300 loss. The third case occurred between 5 and 6:15 p.m. at 957 Newport Center Drive. The suspect entered the locked car by unknown means and took a navigation system valued at $2,000, police said.

“These crimes are all related,” Lowe said.

In September, six vehicle burglaries occurred in one weekend at locations on Newport Center Drive with the thieves targeting third-row seats and navigation systems; read our story here.

Lowe urged residents to take safety precautions, including:

* At night, park in a well lighted parking lot.

* Because most of these crimes have occurred in parking structures, consider parking in an open lot.

* When possible, back your vehicle in against a solid object to prevent access to the rear of your vehicle.

* Use a bicycle-style cable lock to secure the 3rd row seat to the body of your vehicle.

* Engrave your vehicle’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the frame of the seat.

* When not in use, remove your seat and store it in your locked garage.

In other police news, a grand theft was reported at 2 p.m. Friday at Macy’s at 101 Newport Center Drive. The theft occurred between 1:30 and 1:45 p.m. with a loss of $7,500.

Newport Beach police also arrested two people on suspicion of commercial burglary at 7 p.m. Friday at 901 Newport Center Drive. A man, 20, of Westminster, and a woman, 18, of Santa Ana, each had bail set at $20,000, according to arrest reports.
