There were cheerleaders, Angry Birds, angels and devils, pumpkin head monsters and nerds galore at Harbor View Elementary School this morning, all celebrating Halloween with an annual parade.
Third-grader Vanis Buckholz and his teacher, Patti Clark, came dressed as each other.
“I heard a few weeks ago through the grapevine that he was going to dress up like me,” Clark said. “So I talked to his parents and I came as Vanis.”
Vanis wore a jumper with a name tag that said “Hi I’m…Patti Clark,” and Clark wore shorts with a plaid flannel shirt tied around her waist.
Halloween music played as the children marched around the lower playground by grade and parents snapped photos. After the parade, students changed out of their costumes and most rooms held parties with games and snacks.
Newport Beach Fire Department officials issued Halloween safety tips, including:
* Use battery powered lights instead of candles for Jack-o-Lanterns.
* Trick-or-Treat in small groups, with younger children accompanied by adults.
* Use sidewalks and walk, don’t run.
* Wear flame-retardent costumes, and make sure hemlines won’t cause you to trip.
* If you’re driving, be cautious of children who might dart into the street.
* Inspect all candy and treats before eating them.
Also, remember that many local schools, including Corona del Mar Middle and High School, Harbor View, Lincoln and Harbor Day, will not have school on Tuesday.
