CdM Today Reader Comment of the Week

Once again, our reader comment this week comes from Jamie in response to a story about a second residential burglary in a week in the Cameo Shores neighborhood.

Jamie wrote, “Just attended the local neighborhood watch meeting for our area last night. Very informative and well attended by about 20 residents – out of perhaps 80 homes in the immediate few blocks. The main topics were to call the police for ANYTHING out of the ordinary. Especially unlicensed solicitors (and according to the officer very few are licensed) who may or may not be liegitimate. Of MAJOR INTEREST to me was we learned the NBPD only has 12 officers on a typical shift and as few as 4 on duty during shift changes, to cover everything from Newport Coast to West Newport to the Airport. But, there seems to be plenty of money to build a 100 million dollar city hall, even though the city can’t afford a helicopter anymore. The officer said the best protection is to keep your house and cars locked and not leave anything, especially purses or wallets, inside your car, even if they are in your garage. One good piece of news is that something like 95% of overall crime in Newport is property crime and not violent crimes. A great thank you to the residents who attended and take interest in their neighbor’s safety. If you don’t have a neighborhood watch in your area I suggest forming one.”
