As is said about football, it's a game of inches, so too with bike safety infrastructure improvements it seems. Patience not being one of my strong suits, I'm learning that change takes time.

So, it's OK to put motorists in danger by not warning them fully of an impending dangerous situation. Bicycles should NOT be on either of those roads uphill or down. Downhill they can't stop safely at the turns, uphill they cannot maintain normal traffic flow - this puts motorists in danger of either hitting the bike or being rear ended by another car. If I was driving up Ferleaf at 2 or 3 mph a cop would cite me for obstruction traffic. I'd like to see how many citations are issued against bicyclists. Just the other day down by Mariners Mile a spandex covered "pro" bike rider was taking an entire lane of PCH - while riding 15 mph in a 35 zone. Bikes DO NOT belong in traffic lanes, especially on major streets or in dangerous places like these two extremely steep hills. The City, by caving into highly vocal special interest minorities like Frank and the bike gang is opening the taxpayers up to lawsuits by putting motorists into unsafe situations.

I am happy to see this was accomplished. I hope someone with influence can fix the problem at Rudy’s Shake Shack in Crystal Cove where the bike path abruptly dumps into a handicap parking spot where physically challenged people and elderly are trying to get in and out of vehicles. The months-long neglect of this issue is dangerous and disrespectful!

I spoke with managers at the Ruby’s Shake Shack at least four times. I also mentioned it at the Newport Beach Bicycle Safety Committee and presented pictures on the giant projector display and was told our most excellent City Manger would place a call to his counterparts with the State and Ruby’s. I understand he placed the call(s), but still nothing has been done.

To Dan: It would appear that the danger and disrespect at the handicapped parking lot are caused by the bike riders.

hinston chillwurch, the bike path ends in the blue striped handicap door zone and there is no place for cyclists of every imaginable age to go other than over plants and off a curb or into the order window line. Please visit the SUPERSIZED Shake Shack for one of their $8 mini burgers and observe the scene for yourself. I was there today and the only thing different is a new pricey sign stating “bike path ends here.”

That is really a state issue because isn't that state property. Dan, have you talked to anyone at Ruby's?

Oh my god the handicapped and the elderly, people with true physical limitations, are now impeding the progress and wants of the cycle-gangers. Remove those handicapped spots so that those physically capable cycle-gangers can go anywhere they want unimpeded. Damn handicapped and old people trying to enjoy life outdoors, who do they think they are!

Robincdm, the bike path should not be routed through the handicap door zone. There are other easy alternatives available for routing the path. The handicap parking does not need to be moved.
