1. Get in the mood for Halloween at Roger’s Gardens, where the annual Pumpkin Carving Contest and Show will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Entries will fall into four categories: carved, decorated or painted, and children 12 and younger, and winners will receive a Roger’s Gardens gift certificate. Pumpkins must be brought in and ready for judging by 4 p.m., and then you can mix and mingle with the other contestants. On Saturday, Roger’s Gardens will host “A Journey Through the Garden with Nicholas Staddon” from 9 to 11 a.m., which will offer visual ideas to make gardens surprising and intriguing. “Make the visitors work for the best in what you have created, using small garden rooms, hedges, taller flowering shrubs, garden gates, arbors, natural fences, curtains of color and more,” Roger’s website states. 2. Corona del Mar High School presents “Amadeus” at the school’s Little Theater tonight and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $8 to $10 and are available online. The play, by Peter Shaffer, provides an “artist view of the final years of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,” according to the play website. “Amadeus” is the first play in the CdM Theatre Arts’ 48th season.
3. Head to Crystal Cove State Park, where three guided free events are on this weekend’s calendar. At 4:30 p.m. Saturday, a tidepool walk will meet at Pelican Lot #2. At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, you can join a Sunset Hike that meets at the Moro day-use area by the amphitheater. And at 9 a.m. Sunday, you can join a backcountry nature hike that meets in the Moro amphitheater area. There is a $15 day-use parking fee at Crystal Cove.
4. Boo! The Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina is hosting a 14,000-square-foot haunted house from 5 to 9 p.m. through Oct. 31. The haunted house is fairytale themed and appropriate for families, with more than 20 characters in six scenes. Admission is $20 per car, $30 per SUV, $100 per bus and $10 for walkups. 5. Recycled Rags is holding its monthly parking lot sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at 2731 East Coast Highway. In addition to all the merchandise inside the store, racks will be set up in the parking lot with prices cut as much as 40 percent. Lemonade, coffee and hot dogs will be available.
