I haven't seen ants so bad since I was a little kid, and even then only out side. I have never seen ants come in in the droves they have this year. I don't know if it was the fact that last year the summer time bugs were earwigs and I destroyed most of them. I wonder now, as its too late to not kill the earwigs, if they were keeping the ant population in check or if its the heat that's stirring them up so badly. Either way, I have to wake up every morning and inspect every inch of my kitchen for the little buggers, since that's where I keep not only my food but our cats and dogs food as well. every once in a while I'll come out to find one or more of the cats plates covered in a thick layer of moving black mass that I'm forced to wash down the sink. Sprinkling cinnamon under their plates seems to keep them at bay but since my animals are messy eaters it's only a band aid. in fact, this morning, only a few hours ago, I walked into the kitchen barefoot, like an idiot, to take the dog to the yard and came back to feel something crawling on my feet. Turning on the lights I found at least a billion ants writhing around on the floor, flooding my dogs food bowl, which I moved in their recently and forgot to put a cinnamon defense under. After washing his food down the sink, along with the half billion ants that were in the food, I cinnamoned the floor under his bowl and they backed off, and after sweeping up and tossing out the window, the other half billion, I came here to see if any one else is having such bad ant problems in the California area.

Think "medieval" as in castle moat! Take a larger flat glass container, fill with 1 inch water, set pet bowl(s) in it! Voila! No more ants...
