Johnny’s Pizza Opens, Sells Out By 4:30 P.M.

Crowds crammed into Johnny’s New York Pizza on its opening day Friday, gobbling up slices of pizza and Italian ices.

By 4:30 p.m., all the dough was gone and those trying to order pies were told to come back today.

The pizzeria, which opened at 2756 East Coast Highway, is modeled after the owner’s favorite childhood pizza restaurant in Queens, N.Y.

Red and green balloons decorated the front of the restaurant Friday and today. Owner John Younesi said the public’s response was “crazy.” The pizza uses authentic cheese, isn’t overly saucy and has a crispy, slightly charred crust that is typical for New York pies. Younesi encouraged patrons to fold slices as they ate them. He also handed out red and green bracelets to the first customers.

After having pizza on the "second" day of serving pies, I spoke with one of the servers. I was informed the sellout of pies never happened and that they were just starting to sell on the "second" day. Was this all for hype? I suppose it worked for a bit but my overall opinion of the slices was rather negative. The cheese slice lacked much flavor and was so thin and burnt. Partially eaten, my slice was left and so my $3.50 :( ps the gelato is outrageously overpriced for a thimble sized portion

Actually, the sellout did in fact happen. I love Johnny's, definitely one of the best pizza places in SoCal. Delicious pizza, friendly workers, comfortable atmosphere...what more could you ask for? I HIGHLY recommend Johnny's Real New York Pizza.
