Checkbooks

I needed to make a deposit into my checking account this weekend, but all my deposit slips have been used.

Now, this may seem like an excellent problem to have — more deposits going in, fewer checks being written. But that’s not really what is going on.

The real issue is that more and more of my monthly bills are paid electronically. I bet that many of us are doing more banking online, which means a traditional book of checks that has far more checks than deposit slips doesn’t work anymore. I always run out of deposit slips while tons of checks remain blank and ready to be used.

Banks need to create books with more deposit slips to adjust to the new reality of how we take care of business.

And yes, I know I can wait and visit my bank today and deposit this particular check in person.

I just wish that the checkbooks would be adjusted to suit modern banking needs.

Credit unions seem to have figured this out. I don't even need a deposit slip - just a brief note about which account I want the money deposited in. And although I despise Chase, they no longer require deposit slips either.

Really? I'm 34 and never once in my life filled out a deposit slip. ATM machines don't need deposit slips and some don't even need an envelope. I honestly can't think of the last time I went to a bank to see an actual person.

We just order extra books with deposit slips only.
