The National Weather Service is warning coastal Orange County residents that the tsunami warning will remain in effect until about 6 p.m. tonight.

The City of Newport Beach used an automated telephone system to call residents a few moments ago with warnings to stay off beaches and out of the water because of the tsunami generated by the 8.8 earthquake in Chile.
Lifeguards say a 6-8′ surge is possible by 2:30 p.m. today, according to the Orange County Register.

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile has generated a tsunami that could add a foot or two of height to waves in Orange County at 12:12 p.m. today. A second tsunami wave could add the same height about 15 minutes later, and the entire California coast is under a tsunami advisory.
