Holiday House Liquor Store Closes

posted: March 9th, 2011 05:54 am | 12Comments

Holiday House Liquor at 2937 East Coast Highway has closed, with a for lease sign posted nearby and a notice in the window announcing the shop would reopen soon.

“Holiday House will relocate next to Starbucks April 1, 2011, Thanks!” the notice says.

The phone was not answered on Monday, and the line was disconnected Tuesday.

The sign did not indicate which Starbucks would be the liquor store’s new neighbor. A leasing agent for a vacant property near the Corona del Mar Starbucks said that no one had signed a lease for that space — including Holiday House.

Corona del Mar Today will update this story as details become available.

Maybe it's an April Fool's joke? (Early)

I hope the window sign was posted in error. I cannot image a liquor store located between the stationary store and Starbucks. The 2800 block of the hwy has become a real whodunit. Just last week an expensive city-owned 20’ palm tree was cut down and hauled away and nobody, including the city, can locate the perpetrator.

Bit off topic but I think that Starbucks needs to pick up and leave! CdM needs a nice local cafe. It is crazy that we don't really have one. Zinc is good, but not perfect. We need something inviting for a nice relaxing sit down. Something like Cafe Alta in Newport. I hate how Starbucks has become the meeting point for so many people in CdM. It's such a scene, but why?? Are we just that brand loyal here? Or is it because there is a lack of better options? Maybe I should open a cafe here and show CdM how to make a cafe authentic and a real community builder.

Nick, the CdM Starbucks was the first Starbucks in Orange County. It was opened 20 years ago. I hope they stay!

I think you should open a Cafe Nick. It would be nice to have another alternative. As a non-Starbucks coffee fan (don't think it tastes very good unless you add all those syrups), I find myself there often because I can sit and do some work with my laptop and not feel all alone at the home office or that I am taking up space in a place that likes to burn and turn it's customers. I would like to see an old bookstore/cafe that would stay open late so that there would also be an alternative to bars late night for meeting up with friends.

Sandra, I go to Starbucks for the same reasons as you. But I cannot tell the difference in the taste of the coffee after I fill it with cream, fake sweetener and vanilla. It could be instant coffee and I probably would not notice. I totally agree with you on the old bookstore/cafe that would stay open late. You should open that! No need for a beer, wine and liquor license.

I was a customer at holiday house for many years. Owners have 7 highend stores in much nicer areas than corona del mar What I head was they want to open a more Costco pricing store in cdm I can't wait til they open there new store John cdm

John, would you mind providing a list of the seven locations and why you think they are nicer than Corona del Mar? What exactly is a “highend” liquor store and does that make sense with Costco pricing? There are plenty of deals at Albertsons and Pavilions if people want low prices. Bristol Farms has a nice selection of quality liquor, but not at Costco prices. I think the old Holiday House location was better suited for a liquor store, because it is not next to the primary Coast Hwy crosswalk for the elementary school and for other community health and safety reasons.

Sounds like mysteries afoot in the subway- holiday house- coffee bean parking lot. This sounds like a job for the Hardy Boys. First we'll locate that palm tree. Then we'll figure out why the liquor store closed and how it's going to fit in a location the size of a closet. Then we'll go eat subway and drink coffee and feel accomplished. Mission complete!

I've heard other rumors, too, Mike. We could have coffee and discuss it all!
