fiveFive Crowns’ Chef Dennis Brask, who last year was named Chef of the Year by the Southern California Restaurant Writers, will be replaced as part of a “transition” announced today.

“Exciting changes are coming to Five Crowns this spring,” a news release states.

The restaurant will close after dinner service March 20 and reopen in mid-April.

“During the closure, the restaurant’s interior will be remodeled,” the release states, adding that “the warmth and authenticity for which it is known will remain.”

The new executive chef will be Ryan O’Melveny Wilson, who “will take a fresh approach to its tradition of excellent food and service,” the release states.

Ryan is a fourth-generation member of the Frank family, the restaurant’s owners and operators.

SideDoor will remain open during the remodel.

An email seeking information on Chef Brask’s departure was not immediately returned.

My husband and I went on one of our first dates in 1965 to the Five Crowns and have celebrated many occasions there since. Now, they are going to change it again. The last change was the serving wenches uniforms. They went from cute and quaint to coffee shop attire. Now, they are changing the menue, taking out the carpets. Change is not alway good. We will see.

As many other longtime patrons, my wife and I spent our first wedding anniversary at the Five Crown in 1969 and most of our subsequent celebrations at this location. We too have been disappointed in many of the changes and 'updates' instituted over the years ... thank heaven for the consistency of the serving staff. This evening we'll be spending our 43rd Anniversary there ... and are hoping the 'new' Five Crowns is not another drastic departure from the establishment we knew & loved ... if so, it will surely be our last visit!
