CdM Resident Delivers Holiday “Card” to Code Enforcement

A Corona del Mar man collected illegally posted signs for Christmas lighting businesses, then created a holiday card with battery-operated lights and delivered it to the Newport Beach Code Enforcement offices at City Hall.

“I’ve taken them down, taken them down, taken them down,” said Dan Purcell. “I think some people think if they are here, posted for a month or more, maybe the guys are trustworthy.”

Purcell said he’s been removing signs from throughout Newport Beach since early November. He said he made the card to let code enforcement officers know that the signs were a problem in the community.

The Newport Beach Municipal Code prohibits signs on poles.

Newport Beach police last week urged residents not to hire businesses advertising on signs unless you know them. The warning came after a Corona del Mar woman called a lighting business for an estimate, and the person who arrived was an accused rapist out on bail; read our story here.

Code enforcement workers accepted the holiday card but asked Purcell to fold it up. An email seeking comment for this story was not immediately returned.

LOL - if the fellow has that much free time I have some weeds in my yard that need pulling... LOL While most lighting people are good folks just trying to make a buck on Christmas during trying times, you should make sure they have a business license and ask to see a copy of liability insurance. If they fall off a ladder or electrocute themself, or cause an electric short that burns your house down your homeowners insurance might not pay.

Mr. Purcell has good intentions but shouldn't be condescending to the folks he's asking for help. I'm sure that Code Enforcement would love to drop all the rehab home work to remove Christmas light signs. Mr. Purcell, I think the time you spent voluntarily taking down the signs just about got the job done.

Lana, our code enforcement department is capable of handling more than a single enforcement issue. They are educated and trained professionals. Rich, I have the same 24 hours in a day that you have. I use my time constructively, rather than posting slang-filled personal attacks on websites.
