A Newport Beach police car might have caused a Thursday collision by running a red light and crashing into another car at the intersection of East Coast Highway and Avocado Avenue, a police spokesman said on Friday.

The crash occurred just after 7 p.m. Thursday. The officer was traveling east on East Coast Highway and went through the intersection of Avocado Avenue The other driver was southbound on Avocado Avenue and turned left onto eastbound East Coast Highway. The police car struck the other vehicle, then the police unit veered off and his a light pole on the corner, said Sgt. Evan Sailor, a Newport Beach Police Department spokesman.

Both the officer and driver of the second car were taken to Hoag Hospital with minor injuries. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which is standard procedure when a police officer is involved, Sailor said.

In other police news, a woman reported that someone broke into her car outside Javier’s Cantina and Grill at 7832 East Coast Highway on Thursday. The woman said that sometime between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., someone used an object to smash the passenger side window of her Honda, then reached inside and stole her makeup bag from the front passenger seat. The loss was $450, police said.

Two people were arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of possession of narcotics, records show. A man, 21, and woman, 22, were arrested at 11:45 p.m. at Ocean Boulevard and Poppy Avenue and were each held on $20,000 bail.

Police also reported a crime scene investigation at 10:12 a.m. Friday in the 700 block of Heliotrope Avenue, but no other details were available.
