As part of a tradition of community spirit and generosity, the Harbor View Elementary School student body collected money and food items to provide 19 families with a Thanksgiving dinner, parent volunteers said.

“On Tuesday, Harbor View delivered 40-plus boxes of food to Pomona Elementary,” said parent Jacqualine Cernich. “For 19 very needy families, we were able to provide a complete Thanksgiving dinner, other staples for additional meals and a $30 gift card to Smart & Final for a turkey, pies and other perishables.”

Pomona Elementary School in Costa Mesa has many families struggling with day-to-day needs, and 100% of Pomona’s students eligible for free lunch, she said.

Students collected pantry items and money, and on Tuesday several students helped sort, load and deliver the boxes to the school.

“Harbor View community is all about kindness, not just at the holidays — but helping our Sister School is a very meaningful tradition for us at Thanksgiving,” said Jan Parker, president of the school’s Parent Faculty Organization.

The school also collects items for Christmas gifts for Pomona students and their families. You can help by visiting the school’s Holiday Boutique on Wednesday and visiting the “Angel Tree” where ornaments will tell you the age and sizes of a child in need. The boutique will be held in the school’s Multipurpose Room at 900 Goldenrod Ave.

Sixty children will be included on this year’s Angel Tree, school volunteers said.
