Emergency roadwork near Crystal Cove State Park will begin tonight and run through Spring 2012, according to Newport Beach officials.
Caltrans had discovered stormwater runoff had deteriorated the southbound embankment, causing Coast Highway to become unstable.
“Caltrans crews will be constructing two earth retaining structures to protect and stabilize the existing embankment,” the city’s website states.
All work will be performed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday.
Bicyclists are advised that the bike lane/shoulder will be closed for about two-tenths of a mile during construction, and cyclists will need to share the No. 2 southbound lane.
“No vehicle travel lane will be impacted by the closure, but motorists are reminded to proceed through any construction zone with caution,” the city’s website states.
Earlier this month, Caltrans closed the shoulder of northbound Coast Highway at El Morro to stabilize the slope there; read our story here.
