A literacy group that currently is helping 130 local adults learn to read has been awarded a $7,500 grant, library officials said.

The State Street Foundation awarded the grant to Newport/Mesa Pro Literacy to help the organization’s adult literacy efforts that help learners improve basic English reading, writing and communication skills.

Newport/Mesa Pro Literacy is located at the Newport Beach Central Library on Avocado Avenue and provides free literacy instruction to adults who live or work in the Newport-Costa Mesa area. The active adult learners work with 100 volunteer tutors one-on-one and in small group classes.

Organizers said the grant will help fund programs and materials that will continue to help adults learn to read.
