Last weekend’s summery weather — nicer than most of the weather we saw when it actually was summer — brought summer-size crowds to local beaches, Newport Beach lifeguard officials said.

On Saturday, 22,000 people were at local beaches, with 60,000 beach visitors on Sunday, said Jennifer Schulz, a Newport Beach Fire Department and Lifeguard spokeswoman. To compare, during the first weekend of summer vacation in late June, 25,000 visitors were on area beaches on Saturday and 40,000 on Sunday.

This past weekend, lifeguards reported 25 rescues on Saturday and 27 on Sunday, four medical aids treated and transported by paramedics, 42 First Aids treated and 431 preventative actions. Little Corona Beach was not staffed with lifeguards, but Big Corona was staffed with three people.

There was a 2-foot surf and water temperatures ranging from 66 to 68 degrees — up 9 degrees from the prior Sunday.
