Newport Beach is implementing an emergency notification system called AlertOC, and to introduce it and test it out, 119,000 residents and businesses throughout the city will receive a call between 9 and 11 a.m. Thursday.

If your phone lines are listed, you are automatically included in the system and should receive the call with an introductory message, which city officials promise will not last more than a minute. If you don’t receive the test call, you can visit the city’s website, click on the AlertOC button and enter your information, or add numbers or email addresses to get emergency information sent by text message to your cell phone, PDA or email account. You also may opt to have information delivered through special receiving devices (TTY/TDD) for the hearing impaired.

If you have a blocked number, you should add (949) 644-3620 to your approved number list, officials said. The AlertOC system has been tested and is being used in nearly two dozen Orange County towns.
